Control Engineer - Renewable Energy Sector

Join us in this role where you’ll act as a Control Engineer being at the heart of our HV operations, monitoring systems in real time, minimizing the risk of danger, releasing plant and equipment for work, managing safety, security of supply, ensuring compliance and controlling fault situations as they arise, up to and including 400kV. You will work closely with our excellent technical departments within Orsted: - IT, SCADA, Asset integrity Management, Protection, HSE, Compliance & Reliability and Wind farm/OFTO customers.

You’ll be part of The Power Control Team where you, together with your colleagues, will play a key role in monitoring, controlling, and operating our HV electrical networks to consistently deliver renewable energy to the UK’s electrical distribution/transmission infrastructure. Within our department we ensure the energy generated from our wind farms can make its way to millions of UK homes and businesses while we meticulously adhere to Orsted Electrical Safety Rules and Grid code compliance.

As a team, we work closely with the regional HV execution teams and regularly encourage cross departmental working to support development through mentoring and getting ‘first-hand’ working knowledge.

 

You’ll play an important role in:

  • providing HV Control Engineer services to all Orsted UK HV assets and authorised personnel
  • acting as point of contact for our Electricity System Operators (ESO), Transmission System Operators (TSO) and Offshore Transmission Owner (OFTO) stakeholders to ensure Orsted HV networks are operated
  • implementing Generator and Transmission instructions from TSO’s for MW, Frequency, Voltage/ MVAr setpoints and other site-specific requirements
  • conducting remote switching operations on plant and equipment up to and including 400kV as per National Energy System Operator or Orsted wind farm requirements
  • creating, checking and approving HV switching schedules, HV safety documentation and work instructions/procedures/standard operating practices for a variety of work activities on the HV network
  • providing mentoring and Control Engineer training to aspiring team members in association with the Orsted ‘Road to Authorisation’ framework.

 

To succeed in the role, you:

  • attained a qualification in Electrical Engineering or similar  *Note – Qualifications that offer transferrable skills shall be considered but an Electrical bias would be preferred (HNC/Degree).
  • have previously been authorised in a HV Control Engineer / HV Specialist role or similar role offering transferrable skills
  • have experience with power generation, transmission, or renewable energy
  • have experience of SCADA control systems to operate the HV network
  • have an initiative-taking, result-oriented, and systematic approach to your work tasks with safety being at the forefront
  • are equipped with excellent communication skills with English language.
